Trama La figlia del silenzio

Nel 1964, in una notte nevosa, il dottor David Henry aiuta sua moglie Norah a partorire due gemelli, Paul e Phoebe. Scoprendo che Phoebe ha la sindrome di Down, decide di affidarla all'infermiera Caroline, mentendo alla moglie e dicendole che la bambina è nata morta. Caroline, vedendo le condizioni dell'istituto in cui dovrebbe lasciarla, sceglie invece di tenerla con sé e crescerla con l'aiuto di un camionista di nome Al. Intanto, il dottor Henry si rifugia nella fotografia, un interesse nato dopo aver ricevuto in dono una macchina fotografica da sua moglie.
