Trama Barry Lyndon
Nella metà del diciottesimo secolo, il giovane irlandese Redmond Barry sfida a duello un rivale in amore ed è convinto di averlo ucciso. Per questo motivo il ragazzo decide di partire volontario per la Guerra dei Sette Anni, dove si trova a combattere in Prussia prima di disertare. Scoperto, viene ricattato e costretto ad arruolarsi nell'esercito prussiano. Assunta una nuova identità dopo uno scambio con un giocatore d'azzardo, Barry fugge in Inghilterra e convola a nozze con una giovane contessa da poco rimasta vedova. Ma le sue disavventure non sono ancora finite...
